What am I thinking…

Merry Christmas to me from Birchbox! I’m pretty excited to try every sample in this box! Love trying hair oils and this one in particular, smells really good! I’ve been hoping for some sort of a facial mositurizer (that isn’t Supergoop!) and I finally got one! The loose setting powder will be fun to try as I’ve never used it before. The eye pencil color looks gorgeous. The Whish saving cream smells delicious and I’ll most likely be trying tomorrow in the shower! I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New  Year!

What am I thinking…

Another pretty great box! I’ve tried all of my samples except for the MAKE lipstick/primer. The amika nourishing mask worked pretty well. I’ve tried it once in the shower and I think I can get one more use out of it. My hair was soft and silky but not and silky as when I use the Beauty Protector leave in conditioner I received in my last box. The pores no more vacuum cleaner has been a lifesaver lately. Recently, my chin has been breaking out and I don’t typically get pimples/zits (must be the stress of the holidays…). I’ve been using vacuum cleaner and it substantially decreased the size of my bumps. We just got back from Wisconsin last week and were gone for 11 days. I brought the Not Soap Radio body wash along and it is very lemony. It works really well and didn’t leave my skin feeling sticky, as some soaps do. LOVE the RUFFIAN nail polish and am obsessed with the color.  This is my most favorite sample from my box. I hope you enjoyed your November box and now, onto December!

Stitch Fix – November 2014

My November Stitch Fix arrived and I was excited to see what I got this time! Let’s just say two items grabbed me and the rest was just ok. What do you think?

Look by M – Shannon Plaid Infinity Scarf, $32

Love scarves. Love infinity scarves. But this one was just ok. I already own a similar scarf although, it’s not an infinity scarf like this one. I did love it paired with the cords (described below) but I think I could find a scarf I like better on my own. This just didn’t grab my attention.

Verdict: Sent Back

Kut From The Kloth – Jonathan Corduroy Skinny Pant, $68

For this box I did request another pair of colored pants. These burgundy cords did not disappoint. They fit really well and I have been looking to add more pants into my wardrobe right now. The cords are staying with me and will be great for fall and winter.

Verdict: Kept

Pixley – Ivy Feather Print Blouse, $68

This top was the item I was most excited for in the box. I loved everything about it and it is totally my style. Unfortunately, it was too big. My heart broke a little bit that I had to send it back but since I knew I was planning on keeping one item, this made that decision all the more easier for me…

Verdict: Sent back

Splendid – Garcia Slub Knit V-Neck Sweater, $98

Where do I begin with this garment…It was the first item I pulled out of the box and I hated it right away. I hated the color. I hated the way it looked. I was pretty sure I was going to hate the way it fit, too. Oh, and I also hated the $98 price tag. I was spot on. The color and cut of the sweater were not flattering at all. This couldn’t have gone in the return bag fast enough…barf!

Verdict: Sent back

Pixley – Edmond Chevron Print Henley Shirt, $54

This was a wild card. At first glance I didn’t really like this shirt. I thought it looked a little too old lady for me. It also reminded me of the kind of shirt you could probably buy at Wal-Mart. I did give it a chance and tried it on and it fit really well. The fabric was soft and comfortable but I just didn’t like this top.

Verdict: Sent back

The grand total of my box came to $320.00.  With the buy all 25% discount, that would bring the total down to $225.00.

Success again with being able to keep at least one item! Stitch Fix, I’ll see you next year!

Birchbox – October 2014

This post is so overdue but oh well!  For October, I chose the Laggies Box.  That means I knew every sample I was getting this month but that’s ok.  I chose not to be surprised for a reason.  I wanted three of the five samples in this box.  Two of which are ones I’ve already received in previous boxes and the other one is one that I’ve been wanting to try.

Birchbox – October 2014: Laggies

ModelCo – POWERLASH High Impact Black Mascara, Full-size $20

modelco mascara croppedWhat: With a unique brush, this Australian brand’s mascara adds length and volume to every lash.

How: Coat lashes from base to tip, slightly wiggling wand as you go. Layer for extra drama.

Vasanti Cosmetics – BrightenUp! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator, Full-size $34

vasanti croppedWhat: This customer fave mimics the effects of microdermabrasion for glowing, smooth skin.

How: 3-5 times a week, massage pea-sized amount into damp skin and rinse. For all skin types.

Beauty Protector – Protect & Detangle, Full-size $21.95

beauty protector croppedWhat: Best-selling elixir that locks in color, protects from heat damage, and adds silkiness.

How: Spritz generously onto damp strands before styling. Warning: The heady scent is addictive.

Sage + Fasten – Eau de Parfum in Onward, Full-size $50

sage fasten croppedWhat: Grapefruit, green apple, and lemon mingle in this energizing, exclusive-to-Birchbox scent.

How: Dab onto pulse points for a refreshing zing.

Tocca – Crema da Mano, Full-size $10

tocca croppedWhat: Loaded with natural oils, this green tea and lemon lotion absorbs in a flash.

How: Rub generously into hands – and anywhere you need a moisture boost.

What am I thinking…

I was able to try the mascara for a night out on the town. I liked it but I don’t think it was any better than my drug store mascara. I absolutely loved the Vasanti BrightenUp! sample that I received a few boxes back so I decided to jump on the chance to get another sample. Mind you, I’m still not done with the first sample so this will last me a while. I’ve been hoping to try the Beauty Protector – Protect & Detangle. This product alone made me so happy that I chose this box. I love this product so much, I’ve already purchased the full-size (by using my Birchbox points). The parfum was the item I was least excited about but smelled pretty good. The only problem with it was that mine had leaked in my box and the leak made the parfum appear as though it had been a used sample. I reached out to Birchbox and they sent me another one. Unfortunately, that one leaked even more than the first one. It leaked so much that it was entirely empty upon arrival.  I left well-enough alone and decided that it wasn’t meant to be for me to wear this parfum! As you may recall, I received this same Tocca lotion in my September box. We will be traveling next week for 11 days so these will be great to pack in my bag. To sum up, really happy with my decision on getting a box where the samples were already selected.  I’ll use four out of the the five for sure!

Charlie’s Lunchbox

My (almost) two year-old is in a preschool program and that meant I needed to start packing him a lunch. I have been sharing a few photos of Charlie’s lunches on Instagram and have been getting asked for my ideas. To get inspiration for these lunches, I took to Pinterest.  From there, I created a list of foods based on category to make sure Charlie gets a variety of food groups in each lunch.

Here is a list I started:

Sandwich Ideas:

  • Turkey/Ham & Cheese Sandwich
  • Turkey/Ham & Cheese Pinwheels
  • PB & J Sandwich
  • PB & J Roll-Ups
  • Mini Bagels with Cream Cheese
  • Pigs in a Blanket

To make sandwiches toddler sized and/or more fun to eat, I’ve used mini cookie cutters.  Not only are the sandwiches in fun shapes but they are smaller to fit in little toddler hands!

Proteins:

  • Deli Meat
  • Leftover Chicken (from dinner the night before)
  • Cooked Hot Dog
  • Chicken Nuggets
  • Turkey Burger
  • Hard Boiled Egg
  • Beans
  • Cubed Cheese
  • String Cheese

Carbs:

  • Crackers/Goldfish
  • Cereal
  • Pretzels
  • Pasta
  • Macaroni & Cheese

Fruits:

  • Apples
  • Grapes
  • Berries
  • Melon
  • Applesauce
  • Raisins
  • Craisins

Veggies:

  • Frozen Peas (thawed)
  • Shredded Carrots
  • Peppers
  • Cucumber
  • Celery
  • Steamed Broccoli

Dessert:

  • Teddy Grahams
  • Graham Crackers
  • Cookies

The containers I use for Charlie’s lunch all came together and I absolutely love it. It is the Rubbermaid Lunch Blox Kids (kids lunch kit). The kit includes:

  • One sandwich and snack container (w/ dividers)
  • One side container
  • One snack container
  • One Blue Ice (ice pack that the containers snap onto)

Additional items I use for Charlie’s lunches are mini silicon baking cups and as I mentioned above, cookie cutters/mini cookie cutters.

All it takes is some planning and you too, can make cute lunches for your little ones!

Katie

Birchbox – Setptember 2014

So this box arrived earlier this month and it’s taken me a long time to finally share it.  Let me start by saying this month’s box was AMAZING!

Birchbox – September 2014: Fresh Paint

Avène – Cleanance Soap-Free Gel Cleanser, Full-size $20

039What: Infused with French thermal spring water, this purifying cleanser gently removes grime.

How: Lather a quarter-size amount onto face, then pat dry. Great for oily or blemish-prone skin.

 Harvey Prince – Hello, Full-size $55

040What: Best-selling spritz that mingles cheerful citrus with floral notes. Well, hello there!

How: Apply to pulse points and let this upbeat scent do the talking.

Macadamia Promessional™ – Healing Oil Spray, Full-size $14.50-$29.50 (sample I chose to receive)

043What: Lightweight, quick-absorbing formula that combats frizz, boosts shine, and blocks UV rays.

How: Hold eight inches from clean, damp or dry hair and spritz evenly. Style as usual.

 TEMPTU – S/B Highlighter in Champagne Shimmer, Full-size $27.50

044What: Liquid shimmer that illuminates and contours your complexion or gives an all-over glow.

How: Dab and blend on apples of cheeks, brow bones, Cupid’s bow, or anywhere you’d like.

 Tocca – Crema da Mano, Full-size $10

045What: Loaded with natural oils, this green tea and lemon lotion absorbs in a flash.

How: Rub generously into hands – and anywhere you need a moisture boost.

Birchbox Find Alert!

ChapStick® – Dual-Ended Hydration Lock Moisturize & Renew, Full-size $2.99

046What: For instantly smoother, younger-looking lips, use the “moisturize” side of the stick, which has antioxidants CoQ10 and vitamin E. Flip to the “renew” side for an infusion of replenishing plant butters (think: shea and mango).

How: Wear this balm alone, or as a primer for your favorite lip color.

What am I thinking…

I absolutely LOVED this box! Not only was the actual box fun and fabulous but this was the first box that I enjoyed every single sample. The gel cleanser came in a generous sample size. It suds up really well and leaves my face feeling clean. I’ve already received the Hello fragrance in a mystery sample pack and although I said I didn’t want fragrances, I don’t mind this one. I chose the Macadamia oil to be in my box and boy, am I glad I did! I love that it’s a spritz bottle and it smells pretty, too! The highlighter is ok. I like the color and have tried it a couple of times. I like trying it but don’t think this will be a full-size purchase down the road. I loved the Tocca lotion. It smells pretty and left my skin feeling soft. I also like that the scent wasn’t overpowering either. What a fantastic box for me!

July/August Empties

Jiminy Crickets, tomorrow is September! Here are some products that got me through summer.

Caress Daily Silk Body Wash – White Peach & Silky Orange Blossom (Full-size $3.99 at Target)

070How: Apply to a shower pouf, lather and wash skin.

Verdict: This has been my go to body wash and have been repurchasing it for the past year. I like it a lot and feel like it moisturizes my skin. The scent is nice and not overpowering. Although I recently bought a different type of body wash (I wanted to try and shake things up), this will be my fall back as I think it’s a really good product.

L’Oreal® Paris – Revitalift Triple Power Eye Treatment (Full-size $19.99 at Target)

071How: Every morning and evening – massage gently around the eye area until thoroughly absorbed.

Verdict: This product is supposed to repair wrinkles, reduce bags and lift eye area. I do not put in on in the morning but I do apply it under my eyes at night after I’ve washed my face. I do feel like the skin under my eyes is brighter and wrinkles have been reduced. Being a mom and having turned 30 this year, I’m trying to postpone any aging. This seems to be working for me. I’ve already repurchased this product and will continue to apply to my aging eyes…

100% Pure – Gingerade Shower Gel (Full-size $15.00)

046How: Squeeze a small amount of gel into a washcloth, a loofah, or your hands. Massage onto damp skin and rinse clean.

Verdict: I was excited to try this and was sadly disappointed. This smelled lovely but it didn’t really lather. After rinsing, it also left my skin feeling kind of dry and sticky. I just didn’t like this. I received two foil packets of this in my July Birchbox and ended up throwing away the unopened packet. I wanted to like this but the quality of the product just wasn’t there.

Product sample received in my July 2014 Birchbox.

Dr. Jart+ – Dis-A-Pore Beauty Balm (Full-size $36.00)

192How: Using your fingers, blend into skin on face and neck

Verdict: Again, I was looking forward to trying this. But what in the world?!? After applying this product, my face looked like a mortician did my makeup. This is going to sound a bit morbid but have you ever been to a funeral and the deceased person’s face looked like someone caked on about a gallon of foundation or powder to their face?  That is what my face looked like. It made my face not even look real. I also didn’t like how up close you could totally tell I had makeup on my face. I thought the key to makeup was to make it look like you’re not wearing any. I looked like…well, I looked like something and it wasn’t pretty. HATED this. Hate it so much that I’m not even going to use the rest of my sample.

Product sample received in my August 2014 Birchbox.

Supergoop!® – Everyday SPF 30 with Cellular Response Technology (Full-size $48.00)

042_croppedHow: Apply a generous amount to body, face, and neck at least half an hour before heading outside. Reapply every few hours if you’re spending a day in the sun (or after 80 minutes of sweating or swimming).

Verdict: Supergoop! seems to be a common brand that Birchbox sends in their boxes. I should know…I’ve received three-four different samples from this line. I did use this frequently this summer. It was a nice size to throw in my purse/diaper bag and know that I had sun protection with me. Overall, it did the job of protecting my face from getting sun burned but no better than say, Banana Boat. Again, loved the size and the product did work but I’m not going to spend $48.00 on sunscreen…

Product sample received in my May 2014 Birchbox.

I know this post comes off as though I haven’t been enjoying my Birchbox samples but I totally am. The ones that I’ve really been liking aren’t used up yet! Raves for those products will be coming as soon as I’m done enjoying them! And there are some good ones!

Hope you all are having a wonderful Labor Day Weekend!

Stitch Fix – August 2014

Well this was a first.  I totally forgot my fourth Stitch Fix arrived so I was surprised to see the email that my fix was on it’s way! I was horrible and didn’t provide any specific requests to my stylist this time.  She said she did look at my Pinterest board so at least I had that going for me!

Kensie Jeans – Sophia Skinny Jeans, $88

So, I got the tall length in these exact same jeans back in May and I sent them back. They were a little snug and I felt they gave me a little bit of a muffin top.  We all know that that’s not good. Disappointed I got pretty much an identical item in this box as a previous box. It made my box feel like I only received four items…boo!

Verdict: Sent Back

Renee C – Hubert Space Dye Open Cardigan, $58

At first, I thought this was for sure the keeper out of the box. My husband wasn’t as much of a fan. After taking a poll from my friend, I decided to part ways with this cardigan. It was soft and comfortable but the long bulky fabric at the front would probably get annoying. I think if it were just a simple boyfriend type cardigan, I probably would have for sure kept it.

Verdict: Sent back

Splendid – Randy Stripe Pocket Detail Knit Top, $74

I loved this top so much but come on?! $74 for a cotton striped tee…What do I look like? A Rockefeller? I really liked how the neckline had vertical stripes and the rest of the shirt was horizontal. I loved the color combination and tabbed sleeves. Would I wear this all the time? Probably…but I just can’t justify spending that much money for such a simple shirt.

Verdict: Sent back

41Hawthorn – Milan Lace Print Back Pleat Top, $58

Another 41Hawthorn top in size small…and of course it was WAY to big. I guess they missed my notes about being size XS in this particular brand. This “lovely” frock looks like something an old lady would wear. Plus, I’d hardly say there was a pleat on the back… This was the worst thing in the box. I am old at heart but still prefer to dress my age.

Verdict: Sent back

41Hawthorn – Filbert Houndstooth Henley Blouse, $58

So I’m going to sound like a hypocrite here but I am keeping this top. And yes, it’s a size small. But with the particular cut of this shirt, it fit appropriately. This top will look great with leggings or skinny jeans. I probably could also tuck it into a pencil skirt. I see this shirt comes in other colors and I’m so happy I received black and white. It’s more classic. This was the top my husband liked best too, so I guess everybody wins!

Verdict: Kept

The grand total of my box came to $336.00.  With the buy all 25% discount, that would bring the total down to $237.00.

I’m happy that I was able to keep something from my box again. I’ve been lucky to have at least one thing work out so that I don’t lose my $20 styling fee. I liked three of the items in my box, just price and style kind of got in the way of me keeping more than one item. My next fix is scheduled for later in October. Hopefully, I remember to put in some requests this time!

Citrus Lane – August 2014

This has got to be the best Citrus Lane box yet!  Charlie received stuff he can actually use now!

Woodland Growth Chart from Petit Collage ($18.00)

167Exclusive to Citrus Lane, this growth chart is a fun way to track just how fast your baby is growing. The modern design will grow with your little one – up to four feet tall! Leaf stickers help keep track of dates and special notes. Later, fold easily to store as a keepsake. Tip: Measure 21″ from the floor to the bottom of the chart to hang.

I’ve been wanting a growth chart for Charlie and this one is really cute. I also matches his room really well. I only wish I had this sooner so I could have measured him at one year old!

ABC 123 Blocks from Melissa & Doug ($15.00)

168Some toys are classics for a reason. Toddlers love stacking and building (and knocking down) towers, and as they get older will start to recognize their A-B-Cs on these solid wood blocks. We also like that they come with a convenient storage pouch to keep them all together when not in use.

Charlie has been obsessed with blocks lately and my husband and I were saying how we should probably buy some. Wish granted! I was the most excited to see these in the box. We have a few wooden toys from Melissa & Doug and have  been happy with them. Charlie already loves playing with these and the storage pouch is an absolute plus!

Cool It Buddy from Me4Kidz ($2.99)

169It’s amazing how many bumps a toddler gets, especially early walkers who love to explore. These instant ice packs are great for then you’re on the go, or can’t find the ice pack in the freezer. We also like that Me4Kidz is a family business that helps support those with disabilities.

This is neat! Charlie is everywhere and has been starting to run. Although, I’m hoping I won’t have to use it, I know I will!

Language Video Digital Download from Little Pim (Free Trial)

171Studies show that introducing a second language at an early age is great for children’s development. Little Pim’s award-winning program is adorable and fun for little ones. Choose from over 11 languages – just go to littlepim.com/citruslane and chose the code on the enclosed care to download a video for free,

I hope the code is good for a little while because I don’t think we’re quite ready for this yet.

Snuggle Lotion from Episencial ($5.50)

172Baby skin can dry out easily, so it’s really important to hydrate and nourish with a non-greasy lotion. Made with organic ingredients like borage seed oil to boost skin’s immunity, and avocado, flax and primrose oils to soften. Snuggly lotion will likely become a staple in your post-bath routine.

I do put lotion on Charlie so I’ll give this a try.  Not sure it will become a staple in our post-bath routine though…

Overall Impressions of Citrus Lane:

This box blew me away! I was just saying in my last review how I thought Charlie would get more stuff for him to play with rather than practical stuff to use. The blocks and growth chart were home runs for us! The odd thing was that I couldn’t find these exact items on Citrus Lane’s website so the prices are what I found online and are guesstimates.  I do think I got my $30 worth out of this box and also got things that we will actually use! Way to step it up this month Citrus Lane!

Birchbox – August 2014

June took a vacation…I’ve been working, took a trip back to Wisconsin, had family out here and then had oral surgery. I am back and have a Birchbox to share! This month we were able to choose a sample in our August box. Let’s see what I chose and what else I received for August!

Birchbox – August 2014: Lighten Up

amika – Perk Up Dry Shampoo, Full-size $21

191What: Weightless spray in the brand’s signature Obliphica scent that refreshes hair sans residue.

How: Shake can and hold 8-10 inches from head. Spritz roots, then massage through strands.

Dr. Jart+ – Dis-a-Pore Beauty Balm, Full-size $36

192What: The Korean skincare brand’s SPF 30 face protector conceals enlarged pores and controls oil.

How: Using your fingers, blend into skin on face and neck.

ModelCo – Shimmer Bronzer, Full-size $22 (sample I chose to receive)

195What: This lightweight pressed powder gives skin a natural-looking glow with a hint of shimmer.

How: Using a blush brush, lightly dust onto hollows of cheeks, across forehead, and over chest.

Supergoop!® – Forever Young Hand Cream with Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 40, Full-size $11-$29.50

193What: This berrylicious hydrator plumps skin and shields against UVA and UVB rays.

How: Smooth onto hands daily to protect against the signs of premature aging.

Beauty Extra

nügg Beauty – Soothing Mask, Pack of 5, $14.99

196What: This 94% natural treatment relieves dryness, redness, and irritation in 10 minutes flat.

How: Apply to clean, dry face, avoiding eyes and mouth. Leave 5-10 minutes before rinsing.

What am I thinking…

Although I don’t think my hair is suited for second day hair, I’m still happy to try out another dry shampoo! I’m excited to see if this particular dry shampoo adds volume since I have pretty flat hair. I don’t have large pores nor do I have oily skin but we’ll see what Dr. Jart can do. I doubt it will do much because this sample is teeny-tiny!  I picked the bronzer powder and I’m still happy I did.  The powder looks dark but I rubbed some on my wrist to see a swatch and it seems to be pretty transparent, so that’s good! Another Supergoop!..and this is also the tiniest sample.  I do like the smell but holy smokes, this is so small… I am pretty excited to try the face mask so some night I’ll pamper myself with that!  Overall, I’m happy with receiving another dry shampoo, the bronzer and the mask. I think this was a decent box.
